Black Cap Basslet

Black Cap Basslet

Snapshot: Named for the bold black "cap" on its head, the Black Cap Basslet has stunning colours  which fade from deep purple at the tail to vibrant pink at the face, accented with flashes of bright yellow along its body.

Other tidbits: Can grow up to 10cm. Distributed throughout the Mexican Gulf, and West Atlantic Oceans. Prefers dim lighting to mimick its natural deep-reef habitat.

Bare bones must know: Live-rock fish-only system, fish-only system, or reef aquarium.

  • Aquarium set-up: Load up on live rock to create territories and hideaways for these basslets. They're big fans of cozy hiding spots, so rock caves are a must-have. Keep them safe with a sealed or hooded aquarium — they are known to be jumpers when startled, better to be safe than sorry. Maintain an aquatic utopia by nailing the basics: rock-solid water quality with top-notch filtration and routine partial water changes.

Feeding: Basslets, grammas, forktails, and dottybacks are versatile eaters, readily devouring a variety of foods. Among their favorites are small frozen crustaceans like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and top-notch frozen blends.

AQT note: All our fish feast on a diet of seaweed, marine pellets, flakes and frozen treats under our care. Keep the feast going in your tank!
